If your car key won't turn on and you want to replace it, you'll need to replace it. This guide will guide you through how to do it on a Saab 9-3. You'll have to replace the key, buy another reprogrammable device, and buy a new case for your key-fob.
Unlike older models, most modern Saab cars use transponders in the key-fob instead of a physical key made of metal to unlock and start the car. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable batteries in the key-fob can wear out and won't hold a charge for long. This is particularly the case if you use the same key in the same lock.
The good news is that the battery can be replaced easily by a professional locksmith. If you have the proper tools and patience, you can do it yourself. The first step is to disassemble the key-fob out. Insert a flathead into the slot that is in the middle of your case. You must work slowly, as the plastic is very thin and easily damaged.
Once the case is open and you are able to prepare the new key by combining the lower part of the previous key with the transponder and banana on the new key. This will ensure the new key is properly connected to your CIM and can make a huge difference when replacing the sole keys for your Saab 9-3.

It's also a good idea to rotate your keys regularly and clean them regularly so that one doesn't get bent.
Saab cars differ from other vehicles because they don't have traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car recognizes electric signals from the key fob via a special microchip in it.

But we can reprogram your computer's EEPROM, and then prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. You'll save 50% off the price of the dealer! This is the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. Saab's anti-theft system has been relying on this technology for over a decade. It's not quite as effective as a physical door lock however it makes stealing your car much more difficult. That's why every Saab owner should always keep an extra key in their possession.
The majority of new Saabs come with two keys in the factory, but you can upgrade them at the dealer with a handheld computer referred to as Tech-2. Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this rule is the NG 9-3 vehicles that have more modern, more advanced features that require keys-fobs.
The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module of those cars if keys are lost, and they'll charge you top dollar to do it. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys, without replacing expensive modules.
